Justice & False Accusers

This post refers to a story printed in the "National Catholic Register" of July 15, 2007. I STRONGLY SUGGEST THAT THE FALSE ACCUSERS OF OTHERS, AS TO CRIMINAL ACTIVITIES, BE PROSECUTED TO THE "FULLEST EXTENT OF THE LAW" AND EVEN THAT OUR LAWS BE CHANGED TO PROVIDE FOR THE SAME PUNISHMENT, INCLUDING EXECUTION, FOR FALSE ACCUSERS AS WERE OR COULD BE IMPOSED ON THOSE THEY ATTEMPT TO DESTROY. THE DUKE UNIVERSITY LACROSSE TEAM CASE ALSO BRINGS THIS PROPOSAL TO MIND.

I have long maintained that the Church has become obsessed with "mercy" and has forgotten that the maintenance of the Order (The Evil One's main technique and goal is disorder) basic to its preservation and the protection of all of its members requires a balancing attention to and execution of justice. Those persons include falsely accused (Of sexual and other offenses) priests and other employees of the Church.

The cases of the priests mentioned in your very well written July 15, 2007 story, "Helping Accused Priests Is His Calling", brings to our close attention that need to re-balance mercy and justice by such actions as:
1. Insuring that a civil action is filed against the false accuser and
those assisting or encouraging her/him as soon as possible and
well within the statute of limitations for such actions;
2. If that statute-of-limitations is longer for bringing actions
against accused sexual predators than against their accusers,
use that fact as a defense against late accusations; AND,
3. Bring criminal charges against false accusers (And, any
conspirators with them) as soon as possible, but well within
the time limits set by law to insure that justice is done and to
give others who might bring false accusations some pause
to think before they do evil.

Some would say the Step #3 above is inconsistent with mercy and
forgiveness as taught by the Church. They are wrong! Prevention of
evil is better than forgiveness AND forgiveness requires confession or finding of fault and penance--The civil penance contained within our Criminal Codes. (When such false accusers are found guilty of crimes, then both ask for restitution and such mercy as the courts, who deal with what belongs to Caesar, may deem appropriate in cases where an attempt was made to destroy another person.)
