In
the USA politics have belonged in the pulpit and have always belonged
there. This was true when preachers raised questions about the propriety of the British rule in the 1770s, when anti-slavery ministers
preached against slavery in the 1840-1850s (And Rev. Beecher shipped
the most modern rifles, those then "assault rifles" called "Beecher's
Bibles", to "Bleeding Kansas" in the mini-war there before the "War Between The States"), such as Dr. Martin Luther
King who preached against involuntary racial segregation and many other Christians (eg Dr. Benjamin Carson) who use "public pulpits" to preach against the public sins of this
time.
